Thermal insulation

High insulation value

Ytong aerated concrete has a low thermal conductivity, typically between 0.09 and 0.14 W/m·K, depending on the density. This means that the material has excellent insulating properties and, in many cases, no additional insulation layer is required.

Thermal mass
Although Ytong is a lightweight building material, it possesses sufficient thermal mass to dampen temperature fluctuations. As a result, the indoor temperature remains more stable during varying outdoor temperatures, which contributes to living comfort and energy efficiency.

Moisture-regulating capacity

Vapor-permeable structure

Ytong aerated concrete is vapor-permeable. The material can absorb and release moisture, thereby limiting condensation and creating a healthy and pleasant indoor climate.

Limited water intake
Although Ytong can absorb water to a limited extent, moisture does not penetrate deeply due to the fine cell structure. In addition, most Ytong products are designed to be highly resistant to rain and weather conditions.

Acoustic insulation

Sound attenuation

Ytong offers reasonable acoustic insulation, particularly against airborne sound. Due to its light weight, the material is less effective against contact and impact noise. For higher sound insulation, thicker walls or variants with a higher density can be used.

Fire safety

Very high fire resistance

Ytong aerated concrete is non-combustible (fire class A1 according to European standards). Ytong walls can withstand a fire for up to four hours, making the material particularly suitable for fire-safe and sustainable building structures.

Load-bearing capacity and compressive strength

Lightweight but structurally strong

Despite its low weight, Ytong possesses sufficient compressive strength for load-bearing walls in homes and small-scale buildings. The compressive strength typically varies between 2 and 7 N/mm², depending on the type. Ytong is less suitable for structures requiring flexibility or high bending and tensile forces, because the material is relatively brittle and exhibits little elastic behavior.

Environment and sustainability

Sustainable and environmentally friendly

Ytong aerated concrete is manufactured from natural raw materials such as sand, lime, cement, and water. The production process requires less energy than traditional concrete, the material is recyclable, and has a low ecological footprint.

Summary

Ytong aerated concrete combines excellent insulation, structural strength, fire safety, and a healthy indoor climate. Although it is less suitable for heavy structures or applications with very high acoustic requirements, it is a versatile, sustainable, and future-proof building material for interior and exterior walls in residential construction.
